PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION TEXTBOOK JUST PUBLISHED

Nancy McCoy, FAIA, FAPT authored Chapter 6 of Volume II: Balancing Collection Storage with Historic Buildings within the 900+ page Preventative Conservation: Collection Storage, edited by Lisa Elkin and Christopher A. Norris, 100-120. The book, a collaboration between the Society for the Preservation of Natural History, American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, the Smithsonian Institution, and The George Washington University Museum Studies Program was published this fall. It is available in hardback and partially available as a book wiki that will be expanded upon in the future. The book brings together Nancy McCoy’s early career experience with museums within historic buildings such as the Smithsonian Institution’s George Gustav Heye Center of the Museum of the American Indian housed within the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House and Science City within the Kansas City Union Station and more recent experience with house museums managed by the Texas Historical Commission such as the Sam Bell Maxey House to define a methodology for evaluating the appropriateness of utilizing historic buildings for collection storage, and vice versa.
